Dear All,

We are excited to wish you on the occasion of anniversary of Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN). Today, we are celebrating the second anniversary of this organization. We would like to congratulate and thank you for your help and support throughout the journey so far.

We are trying to popularize the philosophy of Open Source throughout the country. Here at BdOSN, we are running a number of projects which convey the message of Open Philosophy. Take the case of Bangla Wikipedia project. Last year, when we involved us with Bangla Wikipedia project (popularly known as Bangla_wiki), we started with only 500 entries. We are delighted to inform you that as of today Bangla Wikipedia comprises of 16,000 entries and it is increasing everyday! The OSS volunteers have already localized a Bangla Operating System. Most of the distributions of the popular operating system, Linux, now come with Bangla support. Thanks to Ankur and others who did this splendid task.

Open Source Software (OSS) means freedom. This freedom refers to freedom to know how a software works when it is used by one, freedom to change if one own or buy a software, to redistribute to one's neighbors and community so that one can share its benefits to all, freedom to use it in one's own language and freedom to keep the software owner/user beyond vendor locking.

Bangladesh Open Source Network was born to carry and profess this spirit of freedom. During the last two years, we are trying to spread the Open Philosophy to all. Our regular activities include (but not limited to):

-     Arranging nationwide localization camps in different universities throughout the country.

-     Arranging nationwide boot camps.

-     Celebrating Software Freedom Day on the third Saturday of September each year. This year Software Freedom Day included rallies in different universities, a day long training camp in Old Dhaka on OSS etc.

-     We are now running an Open Source Support Center at our head office near Karwan Bazar so that anyone facing trouble with OSS can ask us for help.

-     To develop the capacity of our young students, we have created our chapters at different universities.

-     At our office we have set up a distribution system so that anyone can get a copy Open Source Software in CD if the license permits.

-     We distribute books under different open license from our center.

Bangladesh Open Source Network is working towards different levels with different capacity so that the common people can be benefited from ICT in a more effective and affordable way. We know it is a long journey with obstacles. But we are committed that we won't give up! On this special day we would like to thank you all for your support and help. We promise that we shall try our best to present you another great year.
