I want to offer Barbara Kay some clarifications. A hijab doesn't mark women as chattel who are "leashed" to their men. Islam is a religion of peace, where women cover their hair and body so they are not showpieces to be shown to others. In Islam, a woman is more precious than any diamond, so Allah wants her to cover up when she has to go outside, unlike other women who are accessible to all men who see them.
Thanks to the hijab, men can't come close to her because they know this woman is not public property. And a Muslim women is protected by her father or brother because she is so precious. These women are independent in all their decisions at home, and it is the responsibility of the husband or the father to take care of all her needs.
When Muslims come to Canada, they try to mix in with Canadian people. They wear the same clothes, speak the same language and eat the same food. But problems start when our kids grow up here. They want to be like other kids in their schools. At this time we start telling our kids that we are not like them and we have a different identity. Kids can't understand this.
In my thinking, the same thing happened to Aqsa Parvez. It's not a religious matter. It's a matter of changing the family environment, away from the teachings of Islam.
