For more than 18 years now we have been functioning as a citizens' initiative.
You are perhaps well aware that Nagarik Mancha has survived by raising funds through subscriptions, individual monthly/yearly donations, special donations, sale proceeds from NM publications, discount from selling books of fraternal organisations and so on. On a couple of occasions we have taken advertisements in our publications and on one instance we accepted a fellowship for 6 months from SARAI, CSDS, New Delhi.
During the last couple of months we have been communicating with members, friends, associates and well-wisher about matters related to Nagarik Mancha's fund-raising. A large number have responded with suggestions and some with funds. We thank all of them.
Finally we have drawn up the first phase of our fund-raising plans maybe for the next couple of years.
Part-1: We have identified 8 individuals who have committed to collect donations from within their personal network for Nagarik Mancha and hand over Rs 6000 each to us on a specific calendar month earmarked in advance. Such staggered donations on each of the twelve calendar months of 2008 will indeed take care of our monthly office expenses to a major extent. Obviously we are waiting for 4 more such volunteers!
Part-2: There are at present 15 monthly donors who have committed and donate Rs. 25 to Rs. 200 per month. We are looking forward to see that the number of monthly donors increase to 40 which will take care of the remaining part of our regular monthly office expenses. Frankly we look forward to 'monthly' donations from these monthly donors!
Part-3: We are hopeful that there will be at least 50 members/friends/associates/well-wishers who will come up with one-time donation of at least Rs2000 for the year 2008. Cash, draft, cheque or bank transfer – it suits us fine!
Part-4: We are also hopeful that most of the remaining members/friends/associates/well-wishers will understand our problems and make annual one-time donations of whatever amount they feel is possible. We have no problems with the amount of donation – the lack of it is what will sadden us!
Part-5: For the last 10 years now we are accepting Rs. 125 as annual associate membership against which we provide associates with copies of all the publications for that particular calendar year. This arrangement we are seriously considering to review.
Part-6: We request all our existing donors/members/associates to respect their past commitments, if any, since such accumulated arrears is a significant sum by our standards! We are in dire need and we hope you will clear the arrears, if any, by January 2008.

We need almost Rs. 2,00,000 every year.
Ours is an initiative – a participatory collective of citizens. Do we have to go for funds from funding agencies? We don't really think so at present! We didn't have to do it since 1989?
Deep down we are indeed confident that we can raise this amount from co-citizens.
However every now and then our activities come to a grinding halt – just because of funds.
We still believe that it is a question of inadequate fund management practices.
Hence through discussions with many we have launched our present fund-raising drive.
Those who have already donated during the last month or so need only to remain informed!
We appeal to all others to respond within the month of January 2008 since we need to take stock of the situation. Please feel free to reply over email.
