DU teachers demand immediate release of captive teachers
- Ajoy Roy

A group of teachers of Dhaka University, who believe in liberalism,
democracy and secularism held a press conference yesterday (31. 12. 07) in
the afternoon at the Dhaka University Club in which. Unfortunately they have
been depicted as Pro-AL elements by the press. The leaders of the group
including Prof. AFM Arefin Siddiq, erstwhile president of DUTA, Professor
Aminur Rashid, Chairman department of physics, Poet A. Samad, Institute of
Social welfare, Prof. Akhteruzzaman, department of Islamic history & culture
and erstwhile general secretary of DUTA and many others issued an ultimatum
to the government to the effect that the teaches under trial must be
released unconditional within seven days. If the government fail to do so
the teachers will resume the programme of action that was suspended on the
ground of government' request and promised assurance tat a mechanism was
being devised to set free the teachers within a short time. The teachers
reminded the government that following series of talks between the
university authority and the government representative including the adviser
in charge of education and army representatives. Mr. Vice Chancellor of DU
and the acting president of DUTA categorically declared that release of
teachers was a matter of time. Ms Tasmeri Begum, the cunning acting
president of DUTA even said the press and assured her teachers colleagues
that she had a talk with the high power people in the government that her
colleagues in jail would soon be released. She then withdrew the programme
action her colleagues wanted to pursue till the teachers are out of the
jail.

The disillusioned leaders of the teaching community warned the government as
well as the real power holder of DUTA, the acting president & her followers
if their ultimatum is not met with success they will ask for a general
meeting of DUTA to get a fresh mandate for pursuing the original programme.
The teachers accused the pro-appeasement group of DUTA for failure to
generate a momentum in the movement of releasing the teachers. The leaders
warned that if DUTA authority failed to convene a general meeting, they
would go for a requisition meeting as per rule of DUTA constitution. The
teachers denied that there was any difference of opinion in demanding
release of teachers.

Everybody in the campus wanted to believe in view of the Rajshahi Teachers
of RU being released under president's clemency, that the government would
take lenient attitude and drop the charges against the captive 4-teachers of
DU. Their family hoped that they would be set free before the festival of
Eid ul Azha. But alas the government had different plan – the teachers were
brought to the court, charges against them frame and the trial began. Even
yesterday witness of the government were produced. It appeared as the court
proceeding continued the chances of release of teachers becoming more and
more obscure.

As I have been telling many a times that the issue is not that simple – the
academic community of the university has hurt the sentiments of the army and
their ego. Had the army been not involved the case (s) would have been
dropped long ago. Even the unconditional kneeling down apology of Dr. Anowar
Hosain to the army jowans and the officers failed to pacify the injury and
sentiment of the army. It was too deep a wound. It is quite likely the
Rajshahi model would be followed i.e. teachers will be found guilty and
punished, and then the office of the President will be invoked to release
the guilty teachers, their honour and dignity being shattered at the altar
of the army egoism. What is the lesson? In Bangladesh you cannot but
challenge the army authority- they are the symbol of sovereignty and
patriotism, an ultimate savior of the country. No they cannot do wrong! Long
live Bangladesh army.
