[mukto-mona] Lessons from Pakistan

The general election in Pakistan has again proved how irrelevant is religion to politics.  The brew of religion and politics is so dangerous that it can threaten and ruin the sovereignty of a nation. Pakistan is paying the price of that blunder and now there is a rare chance to save the nation from the clutches of those fear mongers who claim that Islam have all the solutions.  There are many people who want to prove that a theology based on medieval principles can be prescribed as a solution to many of our 21st century problems. This is a perilous proposition. The blind urge to cling to some old and out dated ideals is a tendency to block our march towards the future. The tragedy of Pakistan is a solemn reminder that time is not a dormant phenomenon; it's surging and surging ahead eternally. We need to negotiate with this flow of change. The antiquity says that religion was meant to rectify and a persons life when other philosophical options were not available. The truth is that some suicide bombers can kill and scare some people but it can't establish anything good. Any ideal that needs extreme measures to prove its worth is lunacy. It requires abhorrence, condemnation, denial and outright opposition. Unfortunately the mankind will continue to be plagued with some bone headed people who in the name of religion will misguide others to justify their perpetual ignorance. Bangladesh must take lessons from the mistakes of Pakistan. There is a significant ultra rightist religious fanatic for in Bangladesh. They must be watched and controlled.

Recently I was reading a big article in the fascist news paper Sangram attacking a number of secular personalities especially Hassan Mahmood and Dr.Taj Hashmi. This news paper still holding the black banner of Jamate Islami in Bangladesh. It's unfortunate that these reactionaries are still given a chance to pollute the national culture and our ideals. They are the vanguards of the hidden religious extremists who can bring same misfortune to Bangladesh like Pakistan. It's unlikely that these religious thugs will learn anything from Pakistan but the administration must guard against them and listen to the patriotic forces.
