Re: [mukto-mona] Poetry and Hunger: Poetry can be the voice of resistance

IRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto- mona/message/48335

"Even sickle and hammer looks like a poetic combination."---Kamal Das

1. As a matter of fact, Subhash Mukhopadhyaya (?) has a famous poem one line of which is "gaan gaay haturi o kaaste." I think another line of the same poem is "phool khelbaar din noy odyo." Any way, a poet may see any thing as a source of inspiration. But the eventual product must be a "poem"---neither merely a slogan nor merely a serious statement.

2. Poetry has changed form, content, style from time to time. A new generation poetry has always been a shocking (sometimes negatively) thing to the old generation poets. Many old generation poets had hard time to accept the so called post-thirties Bengali poets. Bankim (who praised Madhusudan) and Rabindranath (remember his "se kabir baanee laagi kaan pete aachhi") had the broadness of mind to welcome the advent of the new.

3. Many Bengali poets now in their teens, twenties, or thirties in both the Bengals are writing quality poems. Even Al Mahmud who had to row upstream for some time before he could be established as a great "modern" poet of Bengal has hard (recently I read one of his articles in the daily Shomokaal) time in appreciating the greatness and novelty of latest generation poets.

4. A poet is some one who brings forth happy marriage between "satya" and "sundar" (truth and beauty.)

5. But one thing is true: "sakalei kabi noy, keu keu kabi" (Jibanananda Das.) But the biggest problem is: "sab shaalaai kabi hote chaay" ( Rafique Azad.)
