I do not agree that the democratic political leaders of south-Asia
are ignorant of the true meaning of Secularism. In spite of that,
why the political leaders including the state mixed up the meaning
of secularism (separation of state from religion) with 'equal
treatment to all religious communities' may be found in depth
analysis of the development of political history of the sub-
continent.

In the top of the political agenda in this sub-continent the
democratic political leaderships had to actively engage themselves
to address the eruptions of communal violence. That includes caste
repression.

For this reason the democratic political leaderships is being
incessantly pushed to the agenda of maintaining communal harmony
where state had to recognize/protect religious institution of
worship and education. If state and the democratic political
leadership had pushed religion fully into the private domain and
kept the agenda of communal tensions aloof from public affairs of
the state - would not interfere in the acts of communal violence and
took legislative measures to provide equal rights and protection of
religious practices then how could the state acted upon in keeping
communal harmony vis-à-vis social peace?

This is of-course a dichotomy and that anomaly expressed
interpreting the meaning of the word secularism as state ideology.
The communal and cultural differences are so much deep rooted which
could only be eradicated through measures of ruthless advancement of
a directed cultural revolution. Democracy is rather a slow process
needs decades of taking measures of reforms. In today's world
situation where even Europe is experiencing `return of religion'
slowing the advancement of reform process in the underdeveloped
social setting of south-Asia.

But, having said all that, it does not mean that
socio/political/intellectual movement for secularization of the
society of south-Asia should take the path of compromise or
concession. In that respect, write-up of Mr. Avijit is to be
considered as positive contribution, in clarification and in
exposure of the real-politic of the democratic political leaderships
of south-Asia.
