West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, a polit bureau member of CPI(M), has an alter ego , if we keep in mind the last Congress CM of West Bengal, Siddhartha Sankar Ray. Buddhadeb's role as police minister in the shameful episodes in Nandigram and Singur (Assaulted and killed included some CPI(M) people, although the homeless figure is quite exaggerated. The civil society that are defending the peasants of Nandigram and Singur condemned this unlike the CPI(M) and Trinamul Congress.) is deliberately passive. Which is why it is said that 2500 years ago Siddhartha became (Gautama) Buddha and now Buddhadeb has become Siddhartha (Ray).
This happened today also at Palpara , inside the Jadavpur Assembly constituency which elected Bhattacharjee to the State Legislature. There is a small girls' mess where some students stay. Among them is Debleena Chakraborty, secretary, Matangini Mahila Samiti, named after the famous martyr in the Quit India Movement of 1942. MMS took active part in defence of Nandigram protest.
Today there has been heavy rain in the morning. Suddenly a few police staff entered there to say that they would interrogate them under instruction from above. When Debleena asked who gave the instruction, the police refused to divulge the name. But there were representatives of All India Democratic Women's Association and Student Federation of India - both CPI(M)'s frontal organisations. The police said those girls are Maoists and would search the rooms. Debleena asked them to go out and locked the room from inside, arguing that without search warrant, no search would be allowed. The interned girls phoned up APDR and some teachers of JU like Dr Bhaskar Gupta. Dr Meher Engineer, former director, Bose Institute, was they were. Dr Gupta, APDR people were pushed back and manhandled. The police and CPI(M) people - including some roughs ( evident to those who saw the live telecast by Star Ananda and NE TV ( 24 Ghanta, CPI(M)'s captive channel did not telecast anything). CPI(M) state committee member Rabin Deb claimed that there were none from the CPI(M) and no blockade. The police are not allowing anyone to enter the mess, not even parents/guardians of girls.
CPI(Maoist) is not banned in West Bengal but the police often arrest anyone they like for possession of Maoist literature. Three years back, an APDR activist was arrested for possession of Economic and Political Weekly.
