The Socialist Unity Centre of India, Gujarat State organising committee would like to draw your attention to the fact of registering a police case by the Ahmedabad city police commissioner Mr. O.P.Mathur, on the charge of sedition and conspiracy against the editor of Ahmedabad edition of Times of India, correspondent and the photographer. The action of police is highly deplorable and a direct assault on the freedom of press, which is considered as the fourth estate in a democratic country. Registering the case against Times of India is a deliberate action of Police to suppress the voice of dissent of the press and create an atmosphere of panic in the state, where violation of human rights and Democratic rights have become a regular practice of the Police in Gujarat.
The Times of
Apart from the communalization of the Police Dept. in the state the practice of criminalization of Police is appalling which demands immediate remedy. The democratization of Police and the administration is the only solution which is yet to be free from the hang over of age old the British Rule, to restore faith on the Police and administration. The role of media as the watchdog of democracy and it's role to disseminate right information to the citizen is always indispensable, which the Times of

S.U.C.I. would like to reiterate that there are innumerable instances of overt and covert threats from the Govt. officials to gag the voice of not only the media but also people, in the state and there by curtail the democratic rights and freedom of expression and perpetuate a fascist type of rule in the state. The charge of sedition on Times of
S.U.C.I. demands-
1-With drawl of the charge of sedition and conspiracy immediately
2-Institute a high level judicial enquiry on the charges against Mr. O.P. Mathur.
