DREAM PROJECT (DIABETES RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND ACTION FOR MINORITIES) IS THE FIRST LARGE-SCALE COMMUNITY BASED RESEARCH STUDY TARGETING THE BANGLADESHI COMMUNITY IN NEW YORK CITY

BANGLADESHI COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS WILL BE INTRODUCED
DREAM PROJECT ACADEMIC AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS WILL DESCRIBE THE NEED FOR THIS PROJECT IN THE BANGLADESHI COMMUNITY
------
WHAT: The Diabetes Research, Education, and Action for Minorities (DREAM Project) aims to develop, implement, and test a Community Health Worker Program designed to improve diabetes control and diabetes-related health complications in the Bangladeshi community in New York City.

Community Health Workers are members of the South Asian community who will work with Bangladeshi community members to provide information and social support to address diabetes.

We will be introducing the DREAM Project and our new Community Health Workers to the general public and speaking about our initial data analysis on the impact of diabetes on Bangladeshi's in New York City.

WHY: Diabetes is a growing problem in the Bangladeshi and South Asian community. A survey conducted in the New York City South Asian population found that approximately 17% of South Asians suffer from diabetes, a rate much higher than that of the general population.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 26th, 2008; 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

WHERE: Diversity Center of Queens
76-11 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights, NY 11372

WHO: The DREAM Project Coalition welcome community partners, allies,
friends and media to join us as we introduce our new Community Health
workers and learn about the first large-scale community based health study
targeting Bangladeshis in New York City.
