The late Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was so feared by his people that after listening to his boring lectures the people in the audience were afraid to stop clapping thinking that might brand them as enemies of Stalin. An announcement had to be made to stop clapping. Alexander Solzhenitsyn was not one of the. He rebelled and suffered but did not submit. He was banished from his homeland and continued his struggle for freedom and justice. An intellectual's contribution to establish and promote freedom is essentially different than a politician. This is because we as human beings primarily listen to our hearts first than we act. Every noble literary figure is a very special person who has a mission to fulfil. The Age of Enlightenment or the Renaissance was a meant to upgrade our knowledge to fulfil a great mission to bring emancipation to the mankind. Rousseau and other contemporary philosophers of his times were instrumental to create a motion which brought The French Revolution in 1789. Literature is a driving force to create national awareness to fight for justice and freedom. Communism crumbled not because that it failed feed its peoples but due its failure to appreciate the spirit of freedom.
The role of literature in arousing our passions to appreciate the lofty human dreams can never be underestimated. In its deepest core the art of literature maintains an eternal flame of natural urge to expose the unending flow of human emotions. Through novels, poems, dramas and music it unfurls those sensations which were hidden in our subconscious mind. The truth some people forgets that we are born free and freedom is our most precious passion. Literature awakens that passion and drives us to seek and fullfil that passion. Literature promotes that spirit of freedom which questions everything including the elusive idea of God.
