Averthanus D'Souza's article did not yalk about "reigious bigotry' and, as far as I can tell, did not identify it as one of the characteristics of Hindutwa movement. Neither should Jamaati-types' nefarious anti-people activities be termed as "religious bigotry" without any reference to the accompanying political agenda.
D'Souza wrote:
"It should be quite clear, therefore, that the rejection of the claims of Hindutva cannot be construed as being anti-Hinduism. In fact, it is precisely because of the distortion of Hinduism by the Hindutva brigade that the Hindu intellectuals have rejected it. The Hindutva fanatics thrive on spreading this confusion between Hindutva and Hinduism. They have been able to increase their popularity because they repeat the (false) propaganda that the promotion of Hindutva is the promotion of Hinduism."
A very similar pattern of mass manipulation of religious sentiments with a political aim can be observed in the tactics of the Jamaatis in Bangladesh. In fact, the only meaningful reisistance (culturally and electorally) of the Jamaat has come from the grassroot people. It is because of the political intelligence of the less educated and non-urban, non-metropolis populace of Bangladesh that the nation has been saved from being totally in the grips of these Islamist anarchists.
Our intellectuals, like most of these 'mukto-mona' kind, have been roundly fooled by the religion-wielding dirty politicians who pose successfully as religion-loving "Islamic extremists."
This has turned out to be a most exasperating game!
