Emergency to go on December 17: The relevant clause 3 of the Emergency Power Rules (EPR), which bars the staging of rallies and meetings, would be scrapped on December 12.
 
Bangladesh today announced that the state of emergency would be lifted on December 17."The government has decided to lift the state of emergency from December 17, 2008.

Emergency will be lifted with the approval of the honourable President in view of overall administrative consideration," Commerce Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman told a hurriedly called press briefing, also joined by two other senior advisers, tonight.

But, he added, the relevant clause 3 of the Emergency Power Rules (EPR), which bars the staging of rallies and meetings, would be scrapped on December 12.

Zillur said the election campaigns, however, would have to be carried out under the Election Code of Conduct issued by the Election Commission for political parties and candidates.

Local Government Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal and Communications Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Ghulam Quader and Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim were present at the briefing.
