Law and order slides in capital:70 murders in three months
 
Law and order has nosedived seriously and the incidence of murder, snatching, extortion and robbery has registered a sharp rise in Dhaka city in recent times much to the concern of the residents. The law enforcing agencies seem to be passive onlookers of the grave law and order situation in the capital, some residents said.(The New Nation)

The mafia leaders and their cohorts call the shot in the underworld in controlling illegal drug trade and extortion. The terrorist groups have embarked on re-establishing their supremacy in their respective areas ever since the Awami League took reins of the government.

Nearly 70 murders, over 100 robberies and 200 snatching incidents took place at different areas of the capital during the last three months, police sources said.

Three persons including an Awami League leader received bullet wounds in a gun attack by unidentified assailants in the city's Bangabazar yesterday.The victims were identified as Ruhul Amin alias Ruhul, 40, joint convener of Awami League in ward number 56 of Dhaka city, Jahanara Janu, 50, and M Jasim, 30.

Hospital sources said three gunmen went to the Railway Colony in the area on a motorcycle at 3pm and started firing indiscriminately leaving them injured.
They opened fire indiscriminately to create panic among people for establishing their supremacy at the railway colony, locals said.Earlier last week, some teenage criminals of the Mirpur area sprayed bullets on three security guards of a garment factory in that place.

The victims were identified as guard supervisor Abdul Aziz, and guards Kawser Parvez, and M Amzad Hossain. Parvez died from gun shot injuries after three days of the shooting spree.

In another incident, at least three persons were injured, one of them critically, when a bomb went off at Rainkhola near Eidgah Math under Shah Ali police station of Mirpur in Dhaka on Monday night.The victims were identified as Rana, 22, Nasir, 30 and Alam, 35.

Besides, three people, including a female day-labourer, were killed in separate incidents at Gulshan and Sabujbagh in the capital on the night of April 20.

In the last week alone, 40 robberies took place in as many houses in the capital. The robbers made off with looted goods worth about Tk one crore. Of them, only seven cases were filed with the police, according to sources.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shahidul Huq on Thursday said law enforcement agencies have been given strict orders to crack down on drug lords without sparing anyone even if they have link with any influential quarters.
