[ALOCHONA] Our minerals, our heroes

I was perplexed to see what happened in Phulbari, as to oppose Asia Energy's involvement and it's contract. Deaths were taken as an example to people power. Right or wrong I never could understand the stand and agitation and also the government's actions.

Couple of years past since the lives were gone, nothing were added to the issue, dead  remains in their graves,  so is the coal and the matter itself.

The matter wouldn't have surfaced  until the government awarded the offshore blocks to European and American companies. It appears that, had the government did not make a move on the issue the campaigner had nothing else to do other than opposing the government stands and get beaten or killed. Why they kept quite and not demanded the use of our coal or upgrading our infrastructure like aiding Petrobangla to build its own capacity and so on, so that we can handle the whole matter of our own and can negotiate with an upper hand on the issues?

Should I doubt the intention of the Tel, Gas protection committee? I know those boys and girls defying heat and rain chanting on the streets are more brave and patriotic than many of us specially those big colourful guys often holds their hands in show of protests in front of our sold out media.

What is missing in our context is a strong independent opinion builders, policy planners and organizers who could provide alternative, progressive ideas and frame works on our national issues which people could rely on and mobilize themselves.

An example would suffice – those who writes often on petty thief, small crimes and bad symptoms of our society and earned popularity and often taken as national heroes, generally are silent on big crimes and strategic issues that involves the big politics and world masters. Issues that involves IMF, World Bank, ADB, WFP, WHO, UN, USA and its allies, they appear as cat and started miao, miao. Even the Buriganga, Turag or Dhaka's swamp issue they are not only shy but adamantly quite. These are none but our so called sung heroes – poets, prolific writers, novelists or so called activists. They only dance when the wolf loughs in the fool moon night.

National issues generally are not safe in their hands as it is in the hands of any governments.
