The minister said, "Like Pakistan, we have also a fencing programme for the Bangladesh borders."

The Indian government has a plan to erect fences along the Bangladesh-India border in phases, Union Home Minister P.C. Chidambaram told newsmen at a monthly press conference here at the Shashtri Bhaban on Wednesday evening.

"We have a fencing programme along the border of Bangladesh. The programme has been approved by the Cabinet and there are some portions of the border areas which can't be fenced," the home minister said replying to a query from BSS correspondent. The minister said, "Like Pakistan, we have also a fencing programme for the Bangladesh borders." He said there were some areas - marshy and otherwise - where fencing can't be erected.

He indicated that apart from those portions, the Indian government would erect fences along the border. "India would construct fences where it think appropriate and where there is a need," the Home Minister said. On the Bangladesh-India border, 14 km of new fencing and 13 km of fresh road works were completed during September, the Home Minister reported.

Reacting to questions about objection from Bangladesh over construction of fencing within 150 yards of international border, the minister said there was an understanding that "within 150 yards we will not put up defensive structure." "The Border Outpost (BOP) is not a defensive structure. We can put up fences where we think it is appropriate and where we think we need it and in our part of the border," he said.

However, Chidambaram admitted that there aere some portions of the border which cannot be fenced.
