OIC calls for an emergency meeting to discuss grave developments in Al-Quds

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has called for an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee at the Ministerial Level to be held on November 1, 2009 at its headquarters in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia . The meeting will convene to discuss the grave developments unraveling in the occupied city of Al-Quds and the unceasing Israeli aggressions against the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Palestinians.

The OIC will examine at the upcoming meeting all deployable means to address Israeli violations and the best ways of articulating and adopting a unified Islamic position in a bid to put an end to the Israeli aggression on Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy city of Al-Quds. The OIC will also explore the best means and ways of working closely with the international community to work out a mechanism capable of protecting Muslim and Christian sacred sites and sanctities in Al-Quds.

The OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu had condemned the raiding by Israeli Special Forces of Al-Aqsa Mosque on the morning of October 21, 2009 and the attack launched against worshipers and the mosque's caretakers. He emphasized that attacking Al-Aqsa Mosque is tantamount to a blatant attack against Islamic sacred sites and sanctities.

The Secretary General dubbed the repeated incursions into Al-Haram Al-Sharif as extremely serious and likely to yield undesirable consequences. He pointed out that the intensification of Israeli aggressions against Islamic sanctities in the holy city of Al-Quds entails an earnest and firm stand by the Ummah [nation] to defend its holy sites.

Ihsanoglu appealed to the international community to compel Israel to comply with international law and put an end to its attacks on holy sites. He cautioned that any act likely to damage Al-Aqsa Mosque or any other holy places would bear grave consequences amid both Muslims and other believers across the world with unpredictable ramifications for international peace and security.

Ihsanoglu calls for a new remedy for terrorism based on an integrated approach

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), has expressed his profound concern over the rise of the manifestation of terrorism reaping the lives of scores of innocent people mainly in many countries of the OIC Member States.

Islam is known to have stigmatized terrorism as one of the most heinous crime and wanton outrage. Islam has penalized this horror with exceptionally harsh punishment in consecration of the sanctity of human life.

In reiterating OICs strong condemnation of terrorism under all its forms, the Secretary General noticed that the global war on terrorism has not yielded convincing results because it has focused, mostly, on military means. This approach in addressing this scourge besides betraying its inherent shortcomings seems to have even helped to stoke the fire of radicalism. The main reason for this result is that one is fighting the symptoms of the disease, while leaving its root causes to fester unattended.

The Secretary General added that he firmly believes that it is high time to seek a new remedy for terrorism based on an integrated approach that encompasses political, economic and social aspects, putting the emphasis on using the art of convincing or resorting to local approaches while employing diplomacy, reconciliation, financial and economic measures and encouraging moderate trends.

Based on the aforesaid, he calls for general reviewing of the present policies of combating terrorism and addressing the disputes that plague the Muslim world through integrated and joint actions opening the way for reconciliation and diplomacy.

OIC Secretary General strongly condemns Baghdad twin bombings

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu vigorously condemned in a letter addressed to Nouri Al-Maliki, Prime Minister of Iraq, the heinous terrorist twin bombings in Baghdad on October 25, 2009. The pair of bombings targeted government buildings, killing and wounding hundreds of innocent Iraqis.

Ihsanoglu also denounced the abominable terrorist operations that unceasingly target innocent civilians and seek to spread panic and hatred among innocent Iraqis. These terrorist acts also seek to undermine national reconciliation efforts, hamper the work of constitutional institutions, and turn Iraq into a breeding ground for terrorism.

The Secretary General extended his condolences to the families of the victims of the twin bombings that hit Baghdad and to the government and the Iraqi people, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He urged the Iraqi people to commit to their country's national unity, security and stability and support its constitutional institutions.

OIC General Secretariat and ISESCO pledge to strengthen Joint Islamic Action

A consultative meeting was held between the Secretary General of the OIC, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and the Director General of ISESCO, Dr. Abdul Aziz Othman Altwaijiri, at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah on October 24.  Senior officials of OIC General Secretariat and the ISESCO also participated in the meeting. The Meeting took decisions on streamlining the mechanisms for holding sectoral OIC Ministerial Meetings and other activities with relevance to the scope of activities of ISESCO, in full coordination and cooperation between the General Secretariat and ISESCO.

Projected joint activities in the fields of preservation of the Islamic heritage in Al-Quds and intercivilizational dialogue were also discussed during the consultative meeting.
