Brahmaputra Dam Conflict : China Assures India.

 

 

PTI has reported from Beijing that amid reports that it was building a dam in Tibet on the River Brahmaputra, China Thursday assured India that it would not do anything to damage other nations’ interests. ‘China is a responsible country and will not do anything to damage the interests of others,’ foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a bi-weekly press briefing when asked to comment on reports that China was building a dam on Yarlung Zangbu River or Brahmaputra.The foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, had said Wednesday India had repeatedly raised with China the issue of construction of a dam by it on the River Brahmaputra and Beijing had consistently denied any such engagement.

We welcome the China assurance. Any dam on Brahmaputra would affect the interests of all lower riparian countries including Bangladesh. China should not make a dam on Brahmaputra without full consultation with lower riparian countries.We have  a principled stand in this regard. We said before that India also should not build any dam on Barak River at Tipaimukh without a full agreement with Bangladesh. We want all not to create more international tension by not following international water protocols.
