At least 70 people were injured as rival factions of the ruling Awami League (AL) clashed in Narayanganj and Jhenidah yesterday and the day before.
Our Correspondent in Narayanganj reports: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between two Awami League factions at Rainadi Kalagachhia High School under Araihazar upazila yesterday morning

The clash followed protest by a group of aggrieved Awami League men who were not invited to a function on publication of the local high school's annual examination results and distribution of books.

Seriously injured Shahjahan, 25, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

The aggrieved faction attacked and ransacked the house of local union parishad (UP) member. Dais, chairs and tables at the function venue were also damaged foiling the function.

Sources said, Shah Alam group of local AL was involved with the publication of annual examination results and book distribution but Alek group was not invited to the function.

At around 10:30 am, the two groups locked in an altercation over the issue which followed the attack on local UP member Rafique Miah.

Injured Alek, 40, Ripon, 22, Sanaullah, 20, Awlad, 26, Maqsuda, 30, Selim, 18, Jasim, 26, Alam, 16, Rafique, 35 and Mostafa, 50 have been admitted to local health centre.

Our Correspondent in Jhenidah reports: At least 50 people including several policemen were injured as Awami League factions in Shailokupa upazila clashed on Friday night.

Police lobbed nine tear gas shells and fired nine shots to bring the situation under control.

Of the injured, one Piplu was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition while 11 were admitted to local upazila health complex, 10 others to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital. The rest were treated at different clinics.

Police and eyewitnesses said, the loyalists of former juba league president Nasir Khan of Debtala village under Shailokupa upazila attacked and injured an AL activist Nazrul of Panna Kha faction of the same upazila. Panna recently joined AL quitting the local BNP camp.

Following the incident, the AL leaders and activists of Debtala, Asintoapur, Gokul Nagar, Dahkhola and Harundia villages locked in fierce clash leaving at least 50 people including police injured.

The injured policemen are SI Anisur Rahman, SI Atiar Rahman, constable Harmuz, Faruk, Kabir and Rabiul.

Officer-in-charge (OC) Anwar Hossain of Shailkupa police station said, they visited the spot on Friday night.

Additional police have been deployed, he said adding one AL activist Nazrul Islam filed a case accusing 80 people yesterday.
