One killed, 10 hurt as AL men clash over tender
 
 
One person was killed and 10 others were injured in Awami League factional clashes over bidding in Panchagarh and Dinajpur yesterday.The clash over grabbing the tender for lease of ten ponds in Panchagarh Sadar upazila took place at noon.(The Independent)

Three of the badly injured- Faruq Hossain, Liton and Sujan- were rushed to Thakurgaon Modern Hospital. Faruq (20), a BCL activist, died on way.

Tension ran high as news of death of Faruq spread. Angry activists of the party attacked and ransacked the house of AL district leader Abu Toabur Rahman. They also blocked the Tetulia-Dhaka road for sometime.

Our Dinajpur Correspondent Writes: At least 10 persons were injured on Thursday two factions of the ruling Awami League supporters clash over the Tk 14cr tender of the Dinajpur Public Works Department which was scheduled for dropping on the day.

The tender had been postponed on February 9 last following chaos created by a faction backed by Mirza Asfaque APS of Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Fizar, state minister for land ministry, the leaders of the district AL alleged.

Sources said that a faction of the ruling party backed by Mirza Ashfaque, APS of state minister for land Md. Mostafizur Rahman, cordoned off entire PWD area and prevented the bidders, who came from across the country to drop their schedules from Thursday morning.

The injured were identified as Shamiul Islam, Rafiqul Islam, Towhid, Jashim, Chhutu, Jemi, Tutul, Jaman and Ananda Mohan. Hospital sources said that they had treatment at the Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Later they fled to evade arrest.

The sources said that the Dinajpur Public Works Department invited tenders for renovating the Dinajpur Central Jail. The tenders were scheduled to be dropped today under four groups. The tender boxes were set up at the Dinajpur Public Works Department office. The dropping started at 9 am today. At least 117 schedules of the tender had been sold.

PWD official sources said that from morning the AL activists backed by Mirza Ashfaque, joint Secretary of the Dinajpur AL, and APS of state minister for land, took up position in front of the PWD office from the morning and prevented the bidders from dropping the tenders.

Later, as the general bidders tried to drop their schedules backed by another faction of the district AL, the Ashfaque group attacked the general bidders with lethal arms, including sharp weapons and wooden sticks leaving at least 10 persons injured, it was alleged.

Several chase and counter chases were held creating panic in the area. Later the police dispersed them and brought the situation under control.

Tension is prevailing in the district over the incident.

Md. Nazibar Rahman, Executive Engineer of Dinajpur PWD, said that eight schedules had been dropped.
