On arrest of Sangram Editor and Witch hunt against Jamaat
The press has reported that Abul Asad, editor of the dailySangram was arrested early Tuesday by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) oncharge of inciting Monday's violence in the city.Lt Col Rafiqul Islam, RAB-3 commanding officer, told The New Nation that they arrested Asad from his Maghbazar residence for his role in instigating the Jamaat leaders and activists during Monday's violence.Abul Asad, editor of the daily Sangram was given to three-day police remand. Jamaat activists clashed with police on Monday after the law enforcers obstructed their prescheduled rally at Bijoynagar in the capital. After the clash, DetectiveBranches of police arrested Jamaat acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam, publication secretary Tasneem Alam and its central leader Ijjat Ullah.Meanwhile, BNP chairperson andleader of the opposition Khaleda Zia protested the arrest of Abul Asad and demanded immediate his immediate release. A faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) also protested the arrest of Abul Asad and demanded withdraw the false case against him.
On the other hand Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Tuesday placed Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activist son 19 days remand in four criminal cases relating to Monday's violence on the city street. The court of Metropolitan MagistrateSunanda Bagchi granted 19 days' remand each of the 183 arrested jamaat leaders and workers amidst hue and cry in the crowded court room. The defence lawyers interruptedthe remand hearing demanding production of relevant documents and productionof all the accused before the court. While presenting their submissions they told the court that their clients were tortured inhumanly during police custody after their arrest on Monday.Under demand from defence lawyers, all the 183 including party's acting secretary general ATM AzharulIslam, publicity secretary general Tasneem Alam and Mohammad and central working committee member Ijjat Ullah were brought to the overcrowded court room at 4 pm and passed the order at 6.30 pmPolice sought a total of 35 days' remand for each tointerrogate them about Monday's violence. But the court granted 19 days remand in four cases.
It is also seen that New Nation has headlined "Several thousand Jamaat leaders, activists held across country" and reported that Police in overnight drives onTuesday arrested around 200 leaders and several thousand activists ofJamaat-e-Islami from the capital and different other districts of the country, sources said. Meanwhile, several thousandJamaat leaders, workers and activists have been sued in nine cases for Monday'sviolence in the capital, added the sources.Benazir Ahmed, commissioner ofDhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said on Tuesday that police would take actionagainst Jamaat leaders who were involved with Monday's violence. Police havealready colleted footage from the incident spot, he added.
We feel police has started a vicious campaign against Jamaal leaders and workers in the name of vandalizing some transports. But why people in thousands are being arrested who were not there in Kakrail and bijoynagar area of Dhaka". What is the reason for arresting old editor of Sangram, a major scholar of the country and police asking for his remand and getting it. We do not see police filing any case against those police who raided hospital, arrested doctor on duty and mercilessly beat some fallen demonstrators. We feel it is time now for political parties to file cases against oppressor police officials.
Remand for 19 days of about two hundred people is unthinkable. Police wanted remand for 35 days. The government and judiciary know fully well what happens in remand. We ask the government and judiciary to do something to stop abuse of remand. We are surprised that magistrate normally allow remand prayed by police knowing full well abuse of remand.
