Dear Mukto-Mona, The changing media landscape is hurting our fundraising. When Common Dreams started 16 years ago we decided to become a 501c3 non-profit and fund our news team by pooling together many small contributions. No advertising. No selling our readers’ email addresses. No reliance on big donations from the 1%. And it worked! Reader contributions have sustained us throughout the years. We have seen our peers sell out to corporate sponsors due to financial strain and then watched as everything changed. Top ten lists replaced news. Progressive views were swapped out for celebrity gossip. Political scandals took the place of political analysis. Now advertising revenue is way down as corporate dollars flow to Google, Yahoo and Facebook instead of to news outlets. As a result, the competition for reader contributions is greater than it has ever been. And while our expenses are rising, our donations are off. We want to remain independent. We want the freedom to bring you the truth. We want to continue bringing you the news that matters. But we can’t do it without you. We will not sell out. But we will only survive if we get more aggressive with our fundraising. Can you make a donation right now? In gratitude, Bethany Snow | |
