Report Claims Drinking and Drug Use Are Widespread in Saudi Arabia
Police will turn a blind eye from drinking and wild sex parties if you're upper class.
Saudi Arabia holds an extremely conservative stance on alcohol, drugs, and sex. But a new reportfrom an unnamed ex-pat claims that young, upper-class Saudis are flouting Islamic law by drinking, using drugs, and participating in "wild sex parties" while authorities turn a blind eye.
"Saudi Arabia prides itself with presenting its hard-line and devoutly religious face to the world, but beneath the surface everything is available at the right price and people turn a blind eye in one of the world's richest countries where money is never an issue," said the ex-pat. He called the parties "pretty crazy even by western standards," adding, "many compounds have hot tubs and you often see people having sex in them."
Saudi Arabia follows a fundamentalist offshoot of Sunni Islam called Wahhabism, and those who commit "moral" crimes like drinking alcohol or adultery can be punished by flogging or beheading. But though alcohol is banned, the source said illegally brewed moonshine is widely available. "Potent 99% proof booze is distilled from potato mash inside many of the western communities in compounds and sold freely in all the major cities in Saudi," he said.
Citizens also use the Internet, including apps like Tinder, to secure illicit booze as well as prostitutes, marijuana, and black market abortion pills, according to the report. The source also claims that many young Saudis are getting high off Captagon, an amphetamine used by ISIS fighters to stay alert during battle, and performing dangerous driving stunts.
The salacious report comes on the heels of 210,000 people signing an online petition asking U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron to prevent the public flogging of Karl Andree, who was sentenced to 350 lashes after being caught with 12 bottles of homemade wine. Andree's son, Simon, says his 74-year-old father has battled cancer and has asthma, and would be unlikely to survive the lashings.
According to Simon, Saudi officials told the British government that Andree will be spared the punishment.
