নিউইয়র্কে ঘুরে গিয়ে দাউদ হায়দার তার একটি নিবন্ধে ঢাকাতে লিখেছেন, 'কিছু লোক যেন আমেরিকায় এসেছে শুধু নামাজ পড়ার জন্যে-'? এই হুজুরের মত হুজুরের সংখ্যাই কি বেশি না? আমেরিকার ডলার ও হুরপরীদের বাদ দিয়ে এরা কি অন্যকিছু পছন্দ করে? সোশ্যাল খেয়ে, বাচ্চা পয়দা করা এবং দিনে হাজার বার আমেরিকার গজব কামনা করে এরা এদেশে ভালোই আছে, এজন্যেই আমেরিকা গ্রেট?

নিউইয়র্কে সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে দুজন কূটনীতিক গ্রেফতার হয়েছেন। সবচেয়ে বৃহৎ ট্রাভেল এজেন্সীতে তালা ঝুলেছে। অভিযোগ বহুবিধ। একজন সম্পাদক ইমিগ্রেশনের হাতে গ্রেফতার হয়েছিলেন, এখন ছাড়া পেয়েছেন। অভিযোগ রয়েছে, তাকে ধরিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ কমিউনিটিতে ক্রেডিট কার্ড জালিয়াতির ঘটনা কি খুব কম? প্রশ্ন হলো, এ ঘটনাগুলো কি বিচ্ছিন্ন? না, এটাই আমাদের জাতীয় চরিত্র?
