Mukto-Mona Condemns the Terrible Loss of Life in Several Attacks on the People of Pakistan

With the latest murderous attack on a crowd of innocent people waiting to receive their leader, Ms Benazir Bhutto, from her self imposed exile in Pakistan, the total number of innocent Pakistanis killed in bomb attacks the past 3 months has risen to more than 350. This is in addition to the number of Pakistani soldiers who have been brutally killed by Islamist militants in that country's border regions with Afghanistan in the same period. The soldiers who were sent into Waziristan did not have a choice over going there - they were following orders from above - and many of them ended up horribly mutilated and killed. But, the fate of the hapless public who got blown up was even more terrible. These were supporters of one of that country's major political parties who had gone out to receive their leader returning to the country after a long period outside. These were people who came with the hope that there would be elections in January which would give them some relief from the military jackboot under which they were forced to live ever since Gen Parvez Musharraf took power in a coup. And, for this hope that they would live a normal life that people in other countries take for granted, they paid with their lives.
At Mukto-Mona we condemn the murderers responsible for these attacks. We also urge the government of Pakistan to take the neccessary steps to return the country to a state of normalcy where the Pakistani people could live free and in peace. That is the absolute minimum that people everywhere deserve.
