1. I think we should be a little bit less intolerant and a little bit more respectful. M. Dunn's interview of Prof. Bauer is enlightening although we don't have to agree to all his viewpoints on holocaust.
2. Obviously Bauer's mention of persecution of the Biharis in Bangladesh immediately after liberation as a distant parallel to holocaust has been misplaced. As an example a much better parallel could have been the 'holocaust' that befell the Hindus during the occupation period of 9 months. We all know that after successfully conducting initial massacres of Bengalis in general in Dhaka and other places, and after securing apparent control of Dhaka and other key areas, in order to divert public attention from liberation struggle the occupation force adopted a divisive policy, and in their pursuit to accomplish their heinous objectives they were targeting only 'Muktis' and 'Hindus'. Why drawing a parallel between 'Nazis vs Jews' and 'Pakistani junta vs Hindus' and how persecution of these two groups of people has many similarities make historical sense can be a good topic for further research.
3. The above historical fact does not, however, rule out the possibility of existence of another historical fact which is persecution of Biharis on the newly liberated land. Denial of that fact will testify to an existence of chauvinistic element in our psyche. Initial period immediately after liberation of the country on 16th December was full of chaos and every thing was in disarray. Bihari colonies were attacked and all kinds of pogrom including looting went on. Indian army had to intervene to help the new administration in containing and putting an end to the violence.
