RE: [mukto-mona] A case against me

A. "What began as a movement for autonomy for East Pakistan turned into a rebellion against Pakistani government and a civil war against actual and presumed enemies of Bangladesh."----Taj Hashmi.
A few humble questions:
1. Is call for noncooperation by Mujib on 7th March of 1971 being equated with rebellion? Mujib who had people's mandate never made a call to attack any body.
2. Can civil war be launched against some group? Technically it should be between two groups. Were the people from one group killing the people from another group?

B. "While India considers the communal rioting of 1946-47 as civil war between Hindus and Muslims, Pakistan glorifies it as their "Liberation War"."----Taj Hashmi
-----I decline to call 1946 Kolkata riot a civil war. It was simply a communal clash between two religious communities (Muslims vs Hindus and Shikhs) absolutely confined within a city. As we gather more and more evidences, we tend to believe, possibly rightly, that Jinnah was the initiator and he had backing from the British administration. And we all know that it really helped Jinnah. Inciting one group of people to kill the people of other group cannot be a "liberation war".

C. With respect to Taj Hashmi negative opinion on the trial of 1971 war criminals I would request him to read SIC's article recently published in one daily. A better reference would be hard to find.

Dear All:

Although I mostly disagreed with whatever Mr Shah Abdul Hannan had written in the recent past on islam, shariah etc. But honesty and fairness demand that this time I support Mr Hannan. Had I not seen the video-clips of Ekushey TV, I would have possibly given the benefit of doubt to General Ibrahim and others who claim that Mr Hannan denied that there was ever a freedom struggle in 1971 in Bangladesh. He simply stated that it was both a civil war and a liberation struggle. And I don't see any problem with such an assertion. What began as a movement for autonomy for East pakistan turned into a rebellion against Pakistani government and a civil war against actual and presumed enemies of Bangladesh. The rebellion soon turned into a revolutionary freedom struggle.

If one looks at the Pakistan movement, from day one it was not a movement for total breakaway from the concept of a united India. Had the Congress Party (and Nehru in particular) accepted the cabinet Mission Proposal in July 1946, which envisaged a federal India (one India), thewre would not have been any Partition, at least not in 1947. While India considers the communal rioting of 1946-47 as civil war between Hindus and Muslims, Pakistan glorifies it as their "Liberation War".

Similarly, had Bhutto and his crooked associates, including Yahya Khan, accepted Sheikh Mujib as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, there would not have been any Bangladesh (not in 1971). As throughout history many racial, religious and sectarian conflicts eventually turned into liberation war, the Bangladesh Liberation struggle was no exception in this regard.

I think, since we have so many other pressing problems in Bangladesh, exploitation of the poor and powerless people being the Number One Problem, we should rather concentrate on ways to liberate the people, bringing the actual freedom for the masses, which has NOT taken place yet.

Warm wishes to all.
Taj Hashmi
