RE: [mukto-mona]Read more: Maududi on Muslim Educational Reform

Dr. Yoginder Sikhand, a prominent and tireless scholar and historian of Indian Islam, has done us a favor by writing this review of Moududi's 'Islami Nizam-e-Talim' (The Islamic System of Education). At this stage of the political game in Bangladesh, any authentic piece of information we can get on the background thoughts and ideas of Jamaati and their founder Moududi, the father of MODERN Islamic fundamentalism, is most welcome. And Yogi is authentic.

 

I highlight MODERN, but that is redundant. The meaning of the word 'fundamentalism' in the sense of religious radicalism in our vocabulary and, in fact, its entry in the English language dictionary, is less than 100 years old.

 

Note with care in Yogi's piece:  Moududi had a penchant for modernism, and he rejected the "old system" of madrassa education. This coming from someone who did not receive the traditional madrassa education! The 'old system' contains our centuries old cultural heritage, says Moududi.

 

Aha! Gotcha! The target of Jamaati agenda made crystal clear! The villain of the drama -- -the arch enemy of Jamaat ---none but "our centuries old cultural heritage." Destroy Shah Jalal's majaar, destroy Baizid Bostami – all relics of Bangali Islam's cultural heritage!

Islamise the country in the "progressive" image of Moududi (in competition with the Western imperialism). Do we now begin to see why the agenda of Islamisation smacks of neo-colonialism?

An independent Bangladesh fashioned by the Liberation War is a nuisance, a sore in the soul of Jamaatis, Razakars and neo-razakars. That is why they talk so blithely of Bangladesh being on the verge of extinction.

 

The behind-the-scene marionette Supremo of Jamaati Islami of Bangladesh and all other extremist Islamic groups engaged in illegal activities, is none other than Shah Abdul Hannan. Directly, indirectly or ever so discreetly, he controls their finances.

Shah Abdul Hannan had been an honest Govt. servant. He has not filled his own pocket from his expert handling of millions of taka as the chairman of National Board of Revenue and Islami Bank of Bangladesh.  All he ever cared for is: Islamise Islamise Islamise Bangladesh.

  Remember the Nazi officers at the Nuremberg trial? Most of them were 'honest' and did not take part in the pogrom for reasons of selfish gains. Dedicated to the sentimental principle of preserving the ethnic 'purity' of the Aryan German Race they blissfully committed mass murder of Jews.

 

The cliché of 'pure' Islam is similarly awash with the blabbering sentimentality of someone like Shah Abdul Hannan. Let us not be fooled by his smooth talk and sleek 'innocent' exterior as Prof. Taj Hashmi seems to have been. I have more hard evidence of S. A. Hannan's burning passion for 'pure' Jehadist Islam.
