[mukto-mona] Bardhan backs socialism

Bardhan wants Left to stick to 'socialism'

Amid controversy about what options the Left has at a time when corporate-driven economic policies threaten to devour its socialist ideology, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan has made it clear that there was no question of forsaking, or even diluting 'socialism'.

Bardhan, who is to address a three-day national seminar in Hyderabad in the last week of January, is set to roll out concerted attack on the ideologies of the neo-Left who are openly advocating a major ideological shift in favour of capitalism.

In an informal chat, Bardhan strongly criticised the Prime Minister's concept of high growth-driven socio-economic development.

"Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, socialism is not dead. I would like to tell this to my Left compatriots as well as Manmohan Singh's concept of inclusive growth," he said, quoting from the address he has prepared for the seminar.

"What collapsed in the Soviet Union was their model of socialism, but that did not render the idea of socialism irrelevant," he said.

Left insiders believe that Bardhan's address would set the tone of the political document being prepared for the 20th Party congress.

"By coining a slogan of inclusive growth, the Prime Minister admits that so far all his high growth-driven planning was neither inclusive nor benefited the poor nor they could better the quality of life of the millions," the CPI veteran said.

He pointed out that all the Government benefits conceptualised by these advocates of neo-liberal economic policies go to MNCs and big industrial houses and not to the poor.

"By development in a country like India, we want that people to benefit from these agendas," he added.

Significantly, Bardhan's approach toward SEZs is also opposed to the one advocated by the pro-reform lobby within the Left Front.

"After Nandigram and what has happened in Goa, I think people should stop equating SEZ with new concept of industrial development. Instead they should look back to the industries which are dumped as sunset industries," he said.
