[vinnomot] Re: The present Army Backed Caretaker Government (ABCG) supports the current popular demand - the trial of war criminals of 1971 - Mr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Foreign Adviser of ABCG -

Is it their (ABCG's) MONER KOTHA?

Or just eye wash?

Or to reduce the pressure created by the all out demand for the trial of War Criminal of 1971 from every corner?

Time will prove! But we hope for the best & look forward & hope to see that ABCG will keep their promises.

The present Army Backed Caretaker Government (ABCG) supports the current popular demand - the trial of war criminals of 1971, Foreign Adviser of ABCG Mr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said  on 8th January, 2008.

"Of course, we want this (trial of the war criminals of 1971)," Iftekhar said in response to reporters' questions following a meeting with secretary-general of the Amnesty International (AI) Ms. Irene Khan at the foreign ministry.

"Bangladesh can take lessons from the United Nations on the trial of war criminals of 1971. In Cambodia war criminals were tried after many years," Irene Khan told journalists.

The AI secretary-general expressed concern over extra-judicial deaths under so-called "cross fire".

She said the present government had assured her such extra-judicial deaths had decreased in number.

"But it is not matter of reduction. It must be stopped totally," Irene Khan said.

On media freedom the AI secretary-general said there were some provisions under the emergency rule for putting restrictions on media.

"Though the restrictions have not been applied, the restrictions must go altogether," she said.

The secretary general of AI alleged that previous BNP-Jamt government had not acted on their commitments to form a national human rights commission .

"Unlike the previous government the caretaker government, I hope, will form a national human rights commission," Khan said.
