That is what happened in today's Kerala. Let us see what happened in today's Bengal during the same period, which means about 500 years ago. The following is based on Ghulam Murshid's book "Hajar Bochhorer Bangali Somskriti."
Chaitanya-Deb liberalized and simplified Vaisnabism and thus made it widely popular. The then Muslim Sultans including liberal minded Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah patronized Vaisnab cult and Vaisnab literature. Chaitanya-Deb started a great movement against caste-ism. He emphasized on devotion and emotion thus making religious scriptures a secondary matter. His revolutionary teachings faced stiff resistance from the orthodox Brahmins. He preached his new teachings in Bengali. He did this at a time when it was believed that by telling the Ramayan and other mythical stories in regional languages one would simply go to (Rourob) hell.
Unfortunately he did not live long. It is claimed by some that he was assassinated. Within 50 years of his death his Goswamis settled in Vrindabon and denounced his doctrine and revived Sanskrit after trashing Bengali that Chaitanya-Deb had adopted to preach his new religious teachings. After his death the Vaisnabs got divided on the issue of Caste. One could now see low-caste Vaisnabs and higher-caste Vaisnabs.
