[mukto-mona] Release of Dhaka University teachers and students

Release of Dhaka University
teachers and students

Most of the detained students were severely assaulted by the law enforcers in the name of remand. All the freed students were showing visceral fear of law enforcing agencies when journalists were asking them about their experiences in detention.
Rafiqul Islam Sujon, who was sweating even in the winter morning, was struggling hard to stand upright. On Monday, he was taken to a hospital for treatment. He was having problem breathing and was stumbling as he tried to walk. Sujon however said it felt good to be free. 'But I can't talk much, it's very painful for me to talk now,' he said in a faint voice with much effort.
Another freed student, Liton Mahmud said Shahbagh police tortured him when he was taken to the police station. He had been arrested by Bhairab police on September 8 and was handed over to Shahbagh police. 'Police tortured me and broke one of my fingers on my left hand. They did not even arrange for my broken finger's treatment.'
What is it that makes the protectors, called police, turn into predators?

The freed students and teachers have vowed to continue their protest as before because they say that Dhaka University is the conscience of the nation. They speak for themselves. They do not speak on behalf of my conscience as they suffer from delusions of grandeur.
Four decades ago people owed a huge debt to sincere student politics. But those days are long gone. Students and teachers seem to enjoy the nonsense and negligence that define campus politics in the last four decades. Let them fix their own rotten house before claiming the moral high ground on affairs of the state. It is a pretty pathetic nation that condones rampaging students – simply because they are educated. No doubt those happy at the release are looking forward to our democratic tradition of guns on campus after the next election.

Following the August incident, many things happened on the campus. Teachers and students were arrested, students resorted to agitation programmes, classes were boycotted and so on. The ultimate sufferers were the common students. But my heart bled when the teachers and students were taken into custody. I know how it feels to see fellow students bleeding in the hospital, getting exposed to teargas, being charged with baton and after being wounded not getting any treatment. I could realise how a father must feel when he saw his daughter being beaten up by law enforcers. I believe that their sacrifice will not go in vain.
The University of Dhaka has always produced Shamsuzzohas, not Yahyas.
