Former Awami League state minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya was on Thursday jailed for 13 years for amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.

M Ashraf Hossain, the judge of the special judge’s court 5 of Dhaka set up on the Jatiya Sangsad complex, also fined Maya Tk 5 crore. If he fails to pay the fine, he will need to serve one more year in jail, the court said in the verdict.

The court ordered confiscation of Maya’s wealth of about Tk 6 crore, including two shops at the Bashundhara City, a plot at Bashundhara, 3 acres of land at Matlab in Chandpur and three cars.

The court acquitted his wife, Parveen Chowdhury, two sons, Sajedul Hossain Chowdhury and Rashedul Hossain Chowdhury, and Sajedul’s wife, Subarna Chowdhury, of the charges of abetting Maya in committing the offences.

The prosecution failed to prove the charges against them beyond reasonable doubt, the court observed.

The court convicted Maya, also the city unit chief of the Awami League, on two counts and sentenced him to imprisonment for three years for concealing information in the wealth statements submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission and 10 years for amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.

The sentences will come into execution after his arrest or surrender, as he was tried in his absence, the court said in the verdict.

The commission’s assistant director Nurul Alam filed the case with the Sutrapur police on June 13, 2007 against seven members of Maya’s family. The commission filed the charge sheet on October 25, 2007 against the five, leaving out Maya’s son Rifat Sayeed Chowdhury and Rashed’s wife Farhana Chowdhury.
