On War Crime Issue
A national daily has in its front page reported the attempt by a section of people to cloud and complicate the national situation on the old issue of war crimes in 1971. The daily has reported some of the policy makers in the present administration think this resurrection of the issue anew and try to build up a movement is aimed at diverting the national attention from the preparation of voter list, holding of election and tackling the new economic difficulties the country is facing as a result of price rise and flood and cyclone. They feel surprised that they are trying to start a movement though they were silent for about thirty years on the issue .Moreover, war criminals , if any among Pakistan Army operating here were forgiven and allowed to be repatriated by the then leader of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
We agree with  the above view. We do not see any purpose will be served by a new movement in this regard except political division, recrimination and  fettering away energy in litigations with little possibility of conviction .It is almost impossible to find evidence now , apart from the moral question that how far it is justified to try some local people after releasing Pakistan Army senior officers? It is a different matter that anybody can be tried for murder if a proper case is made and tried.
Some Muktijoddha commanders have become suddenly   too active in this regard. We know that their leader Mr.A. K. Khandaker was a member of the  Parliament in recent past but he never raised this issue in the Parliament. He could move a private member bill in the Parliament even if his party was not prepared for this but he did not do so. How far it is justified to be so vociferous now , does it not show a special political agenda? We feel that we have so many acute problems now and there is no good  political reason or practical need for going after a forgotten old issue when  there is no certainty at all that this will bring any fruitful result.
