STATEMENT
ON THE DEATH OF
NIRMALA DESHPANDE
In the death of Ms. Nirmala Deshpande,
A Gandhian to the core, Nirmala embodied all that the Mahatma stood for, very specially the pursuit of truth. She was a courageous woman who stood up for the poor and the marginalized and for an
'Didi' (as she was affectionately called), worked persistently for communal harmony and peace. As one of the strongest national voices of the Gujarat Carnage of 2002, she repeatedly demanded justice and complete rehabilitation of those affected. She consistently championed the oneness of Indians and Pakistanis and did all she could to bridge the gap between the two countries..
Her death leaves a deep void in the hearts and in the lives of many.
We pray for the eternal rest of the departed soul and that many who cherish her memory will try to live the rich legacy she has left us.
