[mukto-mona] Reflections on Science and Religion:

Message #119 of 119 < Prev | Next >
Sciences, physical sciences as well as soc isl sciences like Ethics,
philosophy etc. have a good chance of replacing the religious myths like
creation as well as of offering the psychological benefits of alternate
rites and structure of the non-supernatural faiths and social rules in
fields of morality, ethics as well as the rational education for a
civilised society. Social sciences can surely to give humanity a sense
of community and belonging that the organised supernatural religion
presently holds. Social sciences, released from the religious hegemony
and stupid the supernatural dogma can give the faithful a rational
soul, a reasonable definition of immortality- as a continued presence in
the form of remembrance of their names and deed in people's memory,
as well as the hope of a good and fulfilling life instead of the
religious dead weight, of mere dark clouds of the stupefying and somber
imagination of a non-existing otherworldniness.

Of course, faith, whether secular or religious, whether natural or
stupidly supernatural can move the mountains ; it has done many good
things as well as bad. To the individual, a ,faith, whether rational or
religiously irrational, gives hope, helps cope with death of loved
ones, and gives strength ; without any need to lie about the soul
travelling to 7th sky, to meet the fictional Allah/God or his son,
son-in-law or Allah/God'd daughter or daughter-in- law…

Faith, whether Humanist, natural or irrational and religious, is a
motivation that to some, especially poor, diseased and lost, seems
necessary for living. To some, Faith is all they have to combat everyday
realities where dogma, whether of religion or scientism, is just but a
word. Food, shelter, and a belief that even if things don't get any
better - that nature and the fellow-humans will welcome them in the
world till their last day.

Science does address this need – and we do have a good chance in
this very world of convincing the irrational religious believer that a
rational and natural faith is not only possible but necessary. How do
you change a man happy in his stupidly irrational religious belief? With
a strong social and financial network of people that are like minded?
Only if we'd continue trying to prove to them their stupidity, maybe
they could at least start sharing our rational world views.

Given that not all Christians are creationists; and even if the
creationists' behaviour embarrass many of them; why would they want to
talk to us? We may justifiably call "supernatural- faithfuls" as
"irrational" and stupid, and reduce their beliefs to the medieval books
they carry - for humans faced with constant social pressure since
childhood become rather simple and religious zombies ; like the patients
who cannot be trusted to diagnosed their own illness and treat
themselves, they, as a matter of course, need to be guided out of
darkness of the ignorance, bigotry and fundamentalism created by the
irrational, outmoded medieval religious superstitions of the
witch-burning and heretic-killing religious brute animals….

I see nothing wrong in looking for meaning, but I do have a problem with
the self-righteous religious dogmas burning Bruno for a faith in
reasonable and rational truth rather than losing the meanings in
religious nonsense….
