Nizami gets bail

Dhaka, July 14 (bdnews24.com) – The High Court Monday granted two-month interim bail to Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami in the GATCO graft case.

The HC bench of justices Sharfuddin Chaklader and Emdadul Haque gave the ruling in line with Nizami's plea, and also issued a rule nisi to the government and the Anticorruption Commission to explain why Nizami should not be granted permanent bail.

Barrister Abdur Razzak, who represented the Jamaat leader in court, told reporters that there was no obstacle to releasing Nizami as no other case against him remained pending.

During the hearing, Razzak told the court that the investigation report in the GATCO should have been submitted within 60 days in line with ACC regualtions.

But in this case, chargesheet was submitted after 251 days.

The lawyer also mentioned that many bureaucrats were involved in the GATCO deal, including the then cabinet secretary, but they were not implicated in the case—Nizami was charged in the case to harass him.

The ACC originally filed the case against 13 people, including former prime minister Khaleda Zia and her son Arafat Rahman Coco, on Sept 2 last year on charges of awarding a deal through unfair means to Global Agro Trade Company for running container depots in Chittagong Port and Kamlapur Rail Station.

The ACC submitted the chargesheet for the case on May 13, in which 25 people including Nizami were implicated.

Joint forces arrested the Jamaat leader on May 18.
