The strange thing about humans is we know everything there is to know
about everyone else and how they must feel and act but we rarely know
ourselves. We have a convenient way of rationalizing our own faults
and failures as somehow more worthy.
All ancient texts have tried to explain this void in understanding.
Jesus said that in order to follow him one had to "forget self". How
many of Jesus' followers understand that Jesus even said that? I wonder?
Surely, if they did understand we wouldn't hear so may cries of
"Jesus help ME!" We wouldn't hear so many people gleefully saying,
"Jesus SAVED ME", even though the child next door was lost.
Know thyself appears to be a perfect example of an unknowable
phrase. Would that more of us truly wanted to investigate what the
words mean to human existence!

P.S. For me, your words "shock and awe" took away from the flow of
your post. The words currently so directly related to war seem to
have no place in the discussion of a subject that is (or should be)
about peace. But perhaps that is my bias shining through??
