Re: [mukto-mona] Sir Salman Rushdie's fatwa against freedom of expression

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49351

1. I will not call Rushdie's going to court a fatwa. Fatwa has been against Rushdie and Taslima. Instead of issuing fatwa, one should resort to the law of the land. One ex Police Officer of WB sued Sunil Ganguly for saying some thing about the Hindu goddess Saraswati. The Police Officer decided that his religious feelings were hurt and he acted in a civilized manner.

2. Every one does not have to agree with Rushdie on every thing. There are allegations that he distorts history. He indulges in imagination to such an extent that his description loses all touch of reality and defies historical facts. I had a chance to read a critical review of one of his latest pieces that involved Akbar in the Desh. Yes, that is what should be done. Go to court or critique him and his works.

3. The author of the article has asserted that "the point was that each society had its own inviolable sanctities and sacred imaginations which define, to a large extent, the collective subconscious of people identified as a single bloc by virtue of nationhood, religion, culture or whatever." If this has to be strictly followed, then no scientific progress is possible.
