[mukto-mona] Sarah Palin Vs. Col. Gaddafi

Gov. Palin and Libya's Gaddafi: Both Wild Riders?

Dr.  Abdul Momen*

President Muammar Abu Minyar Al-Gaddafi of oil-rich Libya is a wild card and loose cannon. When his clandestine forces shot down a U. S. Pan am 757 jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, the U. S. declared him a 'terrorist' and President Reagan sent bombers to kill him.  Unfortunately his infant daughter Hanna was shot dead but he escaped death.  The U. S. imposed 'international sanction' on Libya and demanded payment of $8 billion as a penalty for downing of Pan am jet.  After years of hob-knobbing finally he agreed to pay the penalty and President George Bush withdrew a 30-year old ban and embargoes on Gaddafi in 2006.  In addition, President Bush claimed that he agreed to stop acquiring nuclear bomb and WMD.  This week Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice paid a visit to Gaddafi.  Critics view such visit as a reward for his manipulation to help increase oil price from $17 a barrel in 2001 to over $127 now.  Both Bush-Cheney have business interest in oil.

Like Gov. Sarah Louise Heath Palin, Colonel Gaddafi is a 'straight talker' and a 'firm believer'.  When he sent shooters to assassinate Egyptian President, he claimed 'God authorized it'. When he sheltered the killers of Bangladesh President, he claimed it was 'ordained from God'.  Gene Johnson of Associated Press in his "Palin: Iraq War 'a task from God"  wrote  Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin, told ministry students in last June at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."   She attends evangelical church and she urged her ministry to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will".

This is not all.  Both Gaddafi and Palin have other similarities besides 4-lettered names.  Palin is from a small town while Gaddafi is from a small country.  Both enjoy oil revenue, fishing, vast open spaces and low population. Like Palin he opposes choice and enjoys hunting and family values. Like Palin's teenage daughter Bristol (18), Gaddafi's 5th son Hannibal had a child out of wedlock contrary to traditional family values.  When his son was arrested in Geneva for assaulting a staff, Gaddafi went against Swiss government; put a boycott on Swiss imports, reduced flights between Libya and Switzerland, stopped issuing visas to Swiss citizens, recalled diplomats from Bern, and forced all Swiss companies such as ABB and Nestlé to close offices and their staff arrested.  Like Gaddafi, Palin fired Alaska's public safety commissioner because he refused to fire the governor's former brother-in-law, a state trooper.

At age 27, Gaddafi usurped power in 1969 and became youngest 'maverick leader' of Libya, an 'uncompromising brother'.  Sarah Palin at age 42 became youngest female Governor of Alaska a 'hockey mom and a Barracuda'.  Interestingly, President Gaddafi is very popular in his country and so is Gov. Palin in her state.  Main reason, he is a straight talker and wild, he has the courage to face Washington and he is God fearing.  In addition, unlike other oil-rich Kings or Presidents he distributes over $12,000 cash annually to each of his nationals as 'oil booty'.  Gov Sarah Palin is a straight talker and a wild rider, she has the courage to face Washington, and she is God fearing.  In addition like Gaddafi, she distributed around $1,200 per month to each of her Alaskan residents out of surplus oil revenue.

Question is; do we need a wild rider like Gaddafi who isolated his country and none of his grand visions such as 'United States of Africa', 'Pan Arabism', or 'Green Democracy', a combination of socialism and extreme religion or his support to militant groups across nations including IRA worked?  Will McCain's 'promise of change' end up in futility that of Gaddafi's visions with Sarah Palin?
