Re: [mukto-mona] Atten: Dr Sukhamaya Bain

"-----India would have remained more backward without the British."----Sukhamaya Bain (SB)
I agree. But British did not have to be our colonial master.

"The question is who in India were to be on equal footing with the European rulers?"---SB
-----I am talking about two sovereign countries. India could have many sovereign countries negotiating individually or collectively with an enlightened (also industrialized) European country. Leadership of the progressive movements were to be given by enlightened people. They could come from higher castes or lower castes. This could even come from even a prince like Darashuko. A Brahmin like Vidyasagar would come forward for the oppressed Hindu widows. A Hindu widow would not have to be on equal footing with a foreign powerful country.

"In the world today, the Saudi King is on about equal footing with the US President."-----SB
----True. Probably in some cases Saudi King has upper hand. A Christian (even an American one) is not allowed to enter Mecca. He controls American policies by controlling oil. I am not talking about establishments. I am talking about those who could transform the society. Usually they had to come from outsided the establishment.

"Now, think how slow India progressed looking at the Hindus today."-----SB
----Establishment or the ruling class will never want a change. Ruling class and their representatives have always been more powerful. Even the spiritual democratic movement of Chaitanya Deb was betrayed by his own peoploe.

"When you talk about the British stealing all the gold from the Taj Mahal,-----"-----SB
----It is nothing new. A colonial power and an aggressor will steal. That is natural. History has witnessed many notorious looters like Nadir Shah, Taimur Lang, Mahmud, Gengis Khan, and so on. Like the British they came, looted, and went back.

"Again, my emphasis would be on the human rights and dignity of the average Indian over the material wealth of the kings/nawabs."-----SB
-----I salute you, Sukhamaya.

----SC
