Re: [mukto-mona] Krishnadwaipayan Vyasa

Dates are controversial. The piece of information that the Mahabharata was written about 2500 years ago has been taken from Dr. Nrisinghaprasad Bhaduri. That seems to be reasonable to me. The Iliad and the Odyssey are definitely older than the Mahabharata(probably by more than 500 years.) It is possible that the epic stories from Greek were transmitted to India. [It is interesting to note here that a book titled "The True History and the Religion of India" written by Swami Prakashananda Saraswati, founder of Barsana Dham, USA, has claimed otherwise. The extent to which this book has distorted history has no parallel.] Whatever it may be, there is a fundamental difference between Homer's epics and Vyasdeb's epic: while the former emphasize heroism, the latter glorifies Dharma. This is evident in the fact that the Mahabharata (and the Ramayana as well) and the Geeta (a tiny part of the Mahabharata) are the sacred books for the Hindus. Neither the Iliad
nor the Odyssey has received such an acceptance. The Bible may be the reason. I will be least inclined to believe that the Mahabharata is a corrupted version of the Greek epics.
