Delhi's go ahead for Tipaiukh Dam Project The central government of India has given a go ahead for the construction of the proposed Tipaimukh dam across river Borak in the Manipur state on the east of the Sylhet region of bangladesh, according to information received in Dhaka. River Borak divides into two distributaries - Surma and Kushiara - before crossing the border into Bangladesh and combine to form the Meghna. The Tipaimukh Project envisages construction of 162.8 h high rockfill dam at about 500 m downstream of the confluence of river Barak with Tuivai. The main objective of the project is to generate 1500 MW hydropower and flood control on 2039 Sq. km. The total land requirement for the project is about 31,950 ha. Out of which 26237 ha. is forest land; private land is 5713 ha. Total submergence is about 29150 ha (27550 ha in Manipur & 1600 ha in Mizoram). Construction of the dam will directly affect the flow of river Meghna inside Bangladesh. The Indian government did not consult the lower riparian country which will be adversely affected. The environmental clearance given to the project on 24 October last by the central government is based only study of its possible adverse impacts at the dam site and its neighbourhood. Its possible impacts on Bangladesh which shares the Borak-Meghna Basin have been ignored and overlooked. Engineer Hilaluddin of Angikar Bangladesh has termed this a very bad news for the civilization developed along Barak/Meghna basin of Bangladesh and India. "The Indian authorities have already issued environmental clearance to the disastrous Tipaimukh Dam Poject.
