[mukto-mona] Arab envoys meet Jamaat

Hope for fair polls

Eight Arab envoys in Dhaka yesterday hoped that the upcoming national elections in Bangladesh will be held in a free, fair and neutral manner with participation of all political parties.

"We hope for a good, just and peaceful election," Palestinian Ambassador Shaher Mohammad told reporters after a meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami leaders at the party's central office in the capital's Moghbazar.

Asked whether the war criminals should be allowed to contest the elections, Shaher said it is an 'internal matter' of Bangladesh.

"It is not our concern whatever party comes to power in Bangladesh. Arab countries will closely work together whatever party comes to power," Shaher Mohammad said.

Replying to a query whether they discussed the issue of changing election schedule, Shaher said they are foreigners and don't want to interfere in the internal matters of Bangladesh.

"It is a matter to be decided by the government and political parties," he added.

Briefing journalists, Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid said they told the Arab envoys that Jamaat believes in polls and wants to take part in an election which will be free, fair and neutral.

Ambassadors of Egypt, UAE, Morocco, Libya and charge d'affaires of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait also attended the meeting.

Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, assistant secretaries general Muhammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Qader Molla, and Publicity Secretary Tasneem Alam were present.
