Bangladesh Bank has identified more than 100 loan defaulters from among the aspiring candidates of the ninth parliamentary elections, scheduled for December 29.
At least 45 of them have already obtained stay orders from the court to escape the list of defaulters, who will be barred from contesting the polls.
The central bank’s executive director Khandakar Muzharul Haque, who heads the loan defaulters’ scrutiny committee under the Credit Information Bureau, disclosed the number of defaulters, who had submitted nominations for the upcoming polls.
‘Seven teams are checking the number of defaulters from among the aspirants,’ Muzhar said adding that the CIB was scrutinising default loans of above Tk 50,000.
The central bank also issued a circular on the day for all the scheduled banks and financial institutions to initiate legal action immediately to vacate the stay orders served by the court regarding the default loans.
Sources in the bank informed that the law departments of most of the commercial banks and financial institutions had already contacted their lawyers to move for vacating the stay orders.
‘Bangladesh Bank will send the list of the loan defaulters intending to be candidates to all the returning officers across the country and the Election Commission at 9:00pm today,’ the Bangladesh Bank executive director said on Tuesday.
He also said the concerned banks would also send their officials to all the returning officers to challenge the aspirants, who would fail to repay the default loans.
Earlier, the central bank and the EC issued a circular last week to keep the branches of all commercial banks and the loan recovery divisions at their head offices and the CIB of the Bangladesh Bank open from 9:00am to 9:00pm till December 4.
