[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh Vote Statistics

I have been looking for data on popular vote, but it's been tough to find on the papers I searched.  As all of us know by now, AL and its alliance won an absolute majority of the parliament with roughly 76% of the seats for AL, 10% each for the BNP and JP.  However, when you look at the popular votes, AL won 50% of the votes while BNP won 34% of the popular votes.  Either way you look at it, AL is undoubtedly the choice of the people, however, it is also astounding to know that nearly 34% of the voters voted for BNP.  So, a third of the voters will be represented by only 10% of the parliamentary seats.  AL should look at this fact and be very humble in its use of power to run the parliament and the country.  The numbers show that BNP is still very much politically viable.

The parliament seats are broken down by party as follows:

AL---------------206-----76%
BNP-------------- 27-----10%
JP--------------- 27-----10%
Jamaat-----------  2----- 1%
Other------------  9----- 3%

The popular votes are broken down by party as follows:

AL---------------50.4%
BNP--------------33.8%
JP--------------- 7.8%
Jamaat----------- 5.0%
Other------------ 3.0%

Regards,
Rashed

P.S. The data came from http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/seat-distribution.php and the Excel file is attached.
