As the nation goes to a much-awaited parliamentary election on December 29, a vast majority of voters said they are satisfied with the poll preparation, The Daily Star-Nielsen Election Opinion Poll-2, 2008 revealed.
 
Voters also believe the country's political culture will improve after the elections. And a thumping 95 percent of respondents covered in the survey are confident that they can cast vote without coercion this time, as 98 percent said election environment and procedures have improved than before.
 
The majority of the respondents said honesty, capability and education of the candidates will determine their voting decisions.
 
The survey also revealed that people have high confidence in the media to make political parties accountable in case they deviate from their election pledges.
 
The three major areas covered in the survey are: change in political culture, people's confidence in the election process and institutions and party standings on certain issues. The survey also touched on a raft of issues ranging from people's reaction to manifestoes to what voters want to see in a prime minister.
 
BACKGROUND
The survey, the second in the series by The Daily Star and Nielsen, was conducted during December 14 to December 20 on 5,040 voters in 90 constituencies of 44 districts. The respondents included equal numbers of males and females living in six divisions -- Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet. Of the respondents, 1,792 were from urban areas and 3,248 from rural setting. Income-wise, the respondents were divided into seven groups -- the lowest range being Tk 1,000 to Tk 5,000 a year and the highest above Tk 100,000.
