Now before answering the thread starter, lets see what Science say! It is that from a God particle - Boson invented by Hindu scientist S. N. Bose through a Big Bang this Universe was created and the Creation is still expanding! Hence in Hinduism this Universe/Creation is totally revered as Divine and we worship each and every part of it by saying Namaste - we bow before the Divinity in You! Hence we have 330 Million Gods and more! God is also called Swayambhu due to this Self Creation and our conscience and all which determines good and evil are part of this Universal Consciousness! To us so even a stone or tree part of this Divine Universe is Divine/God/Ishwar/Bhagwan.
This is Advaitavad the highest Philosophy of Hindus and entire mankind though lower forms are allowed as primary stages to reach here. Now mythology naturally comes for easy grasping of religious ideas and if we can see this Unity in Diversity i.e, a stone as apart of Divine Universe with Supreme Consciousness why not worship its Creator the God Particle in Science and God in Hinduism as Shiva/Vishnu/Brahma or any other name?
As for Sati it is no Religious duty and perversion of society temporarily due to Hindu women sacrificing their lives than being concubines of Muslim invaders which naturally ended as its requirment!
Now, eradication of caste discrimination with equal rights for all Hindus including being considered for priesthood is happenng now though caste system may contiue but discrimination made punishable (Hindu scriptures talk of only 4 fold Varna system based on education and occupation which current multi caste system is not - Bhagvad Gita our Holiest Scripture).
