New law gives Dhaka largest number of VVIPs Shahriar Noori
The reintroduction of a law giving protections to Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujib's offspring has given the country an opportunity of having the largest number of VVIPs (very very important persons) in the contemporary world. The number of the adult members of the Sheikh family is now 10.
It may be pointed out in this context that the Queen of England is perhaps less fortunate than the Sheikhs of Bangladesh though her United Kingdom inherits an uninterrupted legacy of running the British Empire effectively since 16th century when Queen Elizabeth -1 ruled the kingdom.
In today's Bangladesh, the members of the extended family of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman includes in-laws and grand children with family names such as Sheikh, Mia, Khondaker and Siddiguqi. They are Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajib Wajed Joy, daughter Putul, Joy's American wife, Putul's husband , Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's husband Shafiq Siddiqi, Rehana's son Boby Siddiqui, Boby's European wife and Sheikh Rehana's daughters.
At present, the adult members are entitled to get secured houses and other related services from the state, as per the dictates and meaning of the unique law, according to informed sources.
Excepting the Sheikh's family, the other lone VVIP of the country is President Zullur Rahman.
Meanwhile, the national news agency BSS reported last month that the government was contemplating to raise another elite security force, Bureau of Crisis Response and Special Response and Protection, with members drawn from the police service. However, informed sources say there is always a scope for the new force - if raised - to be augmented with the members of other elite security forces like the Special Security Force (SSF).
