[ALOCHONA] UN Human Development Index: Bangladesh

Dear Alochoks

Here is the link to the UN Human Human Development Report 2009.

On page 183 you can find the position of Bangladesh on the UN Human Development Index.

http://hdr.undp.org/en/media/HDR_2009_EN_Complete.pdf

Rankings for the sub continent are:

Sri Lanka 102

Bhutan 132

India 134

Burma 138

Pakistan 141

Nepal 144

Bangladesh 146

Well. Almost as bad as our ranking in the FIFA index of foot balling nations!

Of course we are all comfortable being behind India.

But behind Pakistan – in spite of Pakistan’s problems?

More importantly this is indicative of two big dangers that face Bangladesh:

1. An impending stable, democratic and free Burma

2. An impending stable, democratic and free Sri Lanka

Any idea what threats Burma and Sri Lanka pose to Bangladesh in terms of FDI, tourism and overall positive vibes?

It’s a big, big challenge. And we are nowhere near ready to challenge either of these two countries regionally or internationally.

On a brighter note at least we have an educated and sophisticated class of grassroots political activists who are working hard to develop the country…
